it varies. artistic freedom is a lot harder to work with when you have a fanbase that has preexisting expectations for a title. there's artistic freedom with a point, like the revisionism in man of steel. i like that. it's controversial and rage inducing to some people, but immensely cathartic for people willing to go with it as well. then there's artistic freedom for sh1ts and giggles, like the mandarin in iron man 3. i mean the catharsis thing still stands, but there comes a point when your deviation from the source material and your advertising becomes... a bit too much. safe to say that iron man 3 is... not exactly what i'd call the greatest example of a comic book movie.
