(A) Make an IP that is gritty, dark, and gory just like every other game currently (and soon to be) on the market.
(B) Have enough foresight to see that certain genres are over-saturated and try something a little different.
(Bonus) Potentially receive a rating that opens doors to an even larger fanbase.
Also, "lighthearted" was probably a poor word choice to describe Destiny. Borderlands is lighthearted. Destiny seems to have a much more serious and focused tone.
(Bonus) Potentially receive a rating that opens doors to an even larger fanbase.
A mature rating would also open "doors" to a larger fanbase as well, as more older people will buy Destiny. That last sentence is in essence your argument about ratings, and that arguement being that only those whom the rating is designed for will play the game. I do understand what you are saying, but it works both ways.
-
I would disagree. I think the amount of ppl that refuse to buy a game because of its lack of mature rating is minuscule compared to the amount if ppl that won't buy a mature game. It's really a win for us, the end user. The more money bungie can expect to make from the game, the more resources they would be willing to put to the task. Which equals: better game for the end user.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/26814/Study_70_Percent_Of_Parents_Use_ESRB_Ratings.php This is a trusted source... Read the article. 70% of parents use the ESRB ratings when buying a game that their kids want. I'd say a person has to assume that that equates to quite a few lost sales. Now since your so demanding for statistics, why don't you find is a study that shows that people will refuse to buy any game that isn't rated mature.
-
I just asked, if you took it as demanding I'm sorry. I knew that parents not buying a game for there kids if it had a M rating would definitely be much higher, so much that I don't even need to look at your source to believe you. I concur with you, but never did I say the actual amount was equal. And besides, this is all argument for its own sake, all I wanted is for Bungie to make their game without having to take something out because it might not be appropriate for some. Thank you for finding that statistic, I appreciate it :)

由Mattforsberg编辑: 1/8/2014 10:53:22 PMYour welcome. My whole point was that if they are aiming for teen, it's because they want the extra revenue, because they are a business. And that if they can't assume more revenues, they will put more resources(bigger maps, better textures, more detail, ect...) into the game. Don't be upset with them. Trust in bungie.... Have they let us down thus far? So in a sense, they aren't leaving things out. Its probably quite the opposite.
-
Yes, but hopefully they fix the forums soon. I do trust them, by I just feel they may be restricting what an individual user could have received. At the same time, however, they are releasing the game to an audience which may not have been able to receive it firstly...so it's in terms of perspective.

And by lighthearted, I meant lacking elements of realism. I want to see the irritation that chains would cause to a beast imprisoned, dents and cuts in armor where damage had been inflicted, etc. Also, the market is not over-saturated by darkness and grit at all. Please give examples of this "over-saturation" and explain what makes these games dark.

由FairlySplendid编辑: 1/8/2014 9:38:42 PMExamples of games, off the top of my head, that are a combination of gritty, gory (bloody), dark-themed, and/or violent: The Last of Us Dead Space Resident Evil Metro: Last Light Every other "zombie" game currently on the market. Gears of War The Division (coming soon) Metro Outlast Deus Ex Cryostasis The Void

由FairlySplendid编辑: 1/8/2014 9:51:37 PMBuddy, that was just the list off the top of my head. If you don't agree, that's fine. At the end of the day, Bungie is going to make the game they are going to make. They have already made their decision as to which direct to take Destiny. All I'm tell you is that I agree with their direction, and offered you my reasoning why.
-
I agree with the direction they are taking as well, and I agree that the market currently does have many gritty titles in it. I do not agree with how you stated that the market was oversaturated, and I do not agree that Bungie should have limited Destiny by trying for a lesser rating.
-
The way I look at it is, Bungie isn't limited themselves. They are creating a new IP and making design decisions that best compliment that vision. If it turns out those decisions give them a Teen rating, so be it. Because, in my eyes, those elements that typically give a game an M rating: blood, language, adult content, and excessive violence are often just gimmicks. There are way more inspired and clever ways to reach the same goal.

由FairlySplendid编辑: 1/8/2014 9:22:49 PMTechnically, they are only aiming for a teen rating. To paraphrase DeeJ's quote from a few months back... "We're making the game we want to make." Meaning, Bungie is not overly concerned with what rating they ultimately end up with. Regardless, my first statement is on point. The market is over-saturated with gritty, dark games. It's past the point of being clever or original anymore. Besides, one of the design pillars of Destiny is to make a game that people want to come back to day after day, week after week.... an escape from reality. Most people don't want to come home after a shitty day at work (or at school) and log on to a desolated, dark, and sinister wasteland. Not for the long-hale.

由Kurismic编辑: 1/8/2014 9:25:56 PM1.) Please provide examples of over-saturation in relation to total games on the market. 2.) Don't assume that people prefer one thing over another without having asked their opinion. It's evident that you did this when you stated that people would prefer to escape realism after a rough day. 3.) The quality of a game is not solely derived from it being in a new, or developed, genre.

由FairlySplendid编辑: 1/8/2014 9:52:55 PM- I replied to your other commend with a list (off the top of my head) of gritty, blood games. - I'm speaking of the design pillars of Destiny and Bungie's thoughts/comments as to why they whet this route. You can listen to Joe and Chris discuss these pillars in the 2013 GDC panel: http://youtu.be/vUxRTCTr7ic
