A lot of land will be "Blown up" to allow pressure to escape. Lava will cover a lot of land, potentially an entire state while poisonous gas clouds and ash kill off everything in a very wide area. Ash will undoubtedly go around the world for how long? Nobody knows they can only guess. Oh and the surrounding area of the eruption would probably look like Pompeii.
