I'm currently in my last semester of university doing a major in pathology. I actually plan on doing honours next years and take the research pathologist route over diagnostic pathology.

  • What's it like? How tedious is it? How much math is involved? Do you do a lot of modeling? I think an interesting concept is modeling the transmission of diseases among individuals, and how it spreads across the body.

If you're into it (and have great lecturers and tutors who don't put you off the area) it's awesome. Some areas are pretty tedious, especially when it comes to diagnosing a disease from histological samples, and understanding the pathogenesis of all the different carcinomas. Would definitely recommend it if you are into diseases and trying to understand the manifestations they cause on the body.

  • When you're finished with the degree, can you go straight into medicine? I'd imagine that you would need an M.D.

At my University (UNSW), you can go for an M.D. provided you get a high enough GAMSAT mark (massive exam which lasts 6 hours), have a high WAM, and pass an interview. Even then they only accept a maximum of 30 students per year. It's extremely competitive.
