So. A bunch of you must have failed US History
Cause I'm sick and tired of hearing "Democrats are the ones who wanted slavery! Liberals are racist!" etc.
Here's a history lesson that I'll keep simple for you. In the 1850's, yes. Factually speaking, Democrats were the political party who were pro-slavery at the time, and Republicans, especially Radical Republicans, were anti-slavery. So, you are "Technically right".
However, you are wrong. By the turn of the 20th century, the roles had swapped. The Republicans of today are equivilent to the Democrats of the 1850's in Principle. Want proof? Look at a -blam!-ing political map. States that leaned Democrat in the 1800's, now generally lean Republican.
So. The next time I hear what I said above, the person is gonna get a history book shoved up his ass.

The switch happened during Kennedy and Johnson. In order to get the Northern states, and minority vote, the JFK Administration promised to back MLK and the CRM. Johnson ultimately carried through on this promise. The republican party found itself losing the war, and turned to religious people and the South, which was disenfranchised by the new turn of the Democratic Party. So, what was coined "The Neo-Conservative" movement was born. It was a new message of fiscal and moral conservatism, with an emphasis on "Traditional" family values, as defined by the mainly white Anglo-Saxon majority.

1 回复What you are saying is people changed there party but not there beliefs. Republicans are still republicans and democrats are still democrats. Just because the people changed doesn't me the concepts did.

3 回复由Mister Sparkles 编辑： 7/16/2013 8:22:28 PMThe roles hadn't just swapped. It was a gradual change. The KKK of the 20s was mainly in support of segregation-advocating democrats. I understand and agree with you, but the way you put it across makes it sound like an immediate dichotomic reversal.

I had to take AP US History in high school and my teacher gave me a lot of tips to remember her lessons. A few years later, I took two government classes as a prerequisite for a GED, got an A in both of them due to those tips. I appreciate US History, but I find it to be very boring, especially the political parts of it. I prefer world history as a whole in terms of history and culture.
