China to Begin Maritime Surveillance in U.S. EEZ's
For years, China has criticized the surveillance activities of U.S. naval vessels in its 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone. Now China has begun, in however small a way, to do the same thing off Guam and Hawaii. And, somewhat counter-intuitively, this may prove to be in the interests of peace, stability and security right across Indo-Pacific Asia. ... It is common knowledge that China has long resented and pushed back against the presence of American surveillance ships and aircraft off its coast. China considers this bad for its national interest – after all, the Americans are presumably collecting data on Chinese military activities, among other things. China also presumably sees the ongoing presence as an insult to its national pride, a reminder of a history of humiliation by foreign powers. ... Of note, the United States has observed over the past year several instances of Chinese naval activities in the EEZs around Guam and Hawaii … While the United States considers the PLA Navy activities in its EEZ to be lawful, the activity undercuts China’s decades-old position that similar foreign military activities in China’s EEZ are unlawful.”
This is an interesting development, though it is a bit uneasy. While war is unlikely to occur (very, very unlikely, I can never stress this enough), there still exists a small probability of conflict breaking out. Even though EEZ monitoring is perfectly legal, the idea of China gathering more information on the United States military is something I hate, especially when they routinely, and illegally, hack into our defense networks. In any event, this is all indicative of a more aggressive Chinese foreign policy. Thoughts?

        • inb4 people will blame obama for this OT: I have no real opinion about this. Part of me says that it's just karma for what the US has been doing the whole time, but part of me says that we should do something about it. I'm conflicted on this.

If you don't think this is okay kill yourself. The US has been doing the same thing for decades to other countries, INCLUDING China. But no, no other countries deserve the right to spy on others besides the Home of the Free!

            • Both sides in this are one-eyed hypocrites; America for protesting when China give back as good as they got and China for conducting an activity they have previously labelled illegal. Not that it will make much of a difference in the long run; both countries have too much invested in one another to even contemplate war. Trade between the US and China is mutually beneficial and will continue to be for the next several decades; neither side has anything to gain and everything to lose from engaging in conflict, no matter how sterile.

              •
Thoughts?
I'm still of the opinion that we ban anything originating from China from entering US territory. Hack our computers? Fine. -blam!- your economy bitch.

                  • What does the USA even do when China steals their tech via cyber espionage? I hear this happening like every week and I don't hear any thing about what the USA plans to do.

                    • Why not welcome a level playing field ? Honestly, look at the US - it complains and bitches all the time - its like the spoiled child that want all the sandpit toys to itself. Its like the whole nuclear debate, it complains about everyone else yet it is the only nation to use nuclear weapons against another state (twice in war, and multiple time since). It also continues to develop new nuclear weapons whilst calling for other nations to stop their research. It is the same with their bases - they continue to occupy foreign territories ... even those that it blackmailed into releasing during WW2. Canada, the UK and others had to sign away rights to their national territories in exchange for weapons in order to defend themselves. China is only playing on a level field. If the US doesn't like that field then withdraw from play itself, not like China (and many many others have not previously requested). What the US does not want to accept is that its day of control are numbered, and their reactions in these event will judge how they are treated in the future.

                      • -blam!-ing mainlanders. What we should do is try and blockade the PRC Navy if we can, fire some warning shots at them to get them to back off, if they don't back off then whatever they try and send gets blown up. I do not like the idea of any PRC military presence in American waters/airspace. I really hope the DoD is actively trying to shift its focus to the Pacific.
