I don't think starting a whole new series for TV and calling in Steven Spielberg counts as distancing themselves. Perhaps they're just saving the big guns for E3 when they'll have some competition.
In terms of making news in the gaming community, not today. During E3 a lot of people will be looking for new info, and that's when Microsoft is going to have to be able to compete.
Just Sony, nobody else Nintendo has tripped on the 1st hurdle and are out of the race and Project Shield or Ouya is no competition to a giant such as Microsoft
It's a 2 horse race each with 70+ million customer (Or consoles sold) and if Microsoft can get the casual market it to pick the console, they win.
And I feel they will, if the console is cheaper than the PS4 and it clearly has more offer then Sony loses
