Watch the cutscene in the middle of Reclaimer and the Terminals, bro. Everything's explained pretty clearly. The Ur-Didact took the Composer and committed crimes against the Mantle by using it on the Librarian's humans on Omega Halo, she pursues him and incapacitates him aboard his ship with a Binary Rifle. She then seals him away inside his Cryptum in Requiem so his mind can recover through many years of meditation on his choices so that when he awakens he will find a newly evolved humanity and he will help them attain the Mantle. However, Ur-Didact's experience in a Flood-infested system and torture at the hands of the Gravemind drove him into insanity, and the Domain which was supposed to heal his mind in the Cryptum was destroyed when the Halos fired, as the Precursors reveal that the Domain, Mantle and Organon (a Forerunner myth) are the same and based off the Precursors' neural physics which the Halos destroy. Ur-Didact is left to stew in his hatred and Flood-addled insanity for 100,000 years. He awakens rather grumpily when he sees that humanity, the enemy he fought against and the cause of the death of all his children, has endured and are taking what he believes belongs to the Forerunners alone.

  • Forerunner 'triumphs'. We've been taking their technology, for instance the UNSC Infinity is heavily comprised of Forerunner technology. And ultimately humanity is set to take the Forerunners' Mantle, guardianship over life in the galaxy. Again, the Librarian explains this in Reclaimer, Spartan Ops Episode 9, and the Didact in Shutdown and the Epilogue.

This really should have been said in-game, since anyone who doesn't follow the extended universe will have no idea who the didact is and see him as a depthless forced villain. I mean, would it have been so hard for the librarian to let John know about this during that vision?

  • The Didact has been around for over 5 years now, he was a major part of Halo 3's ARG and Terminals. If the player doesn't care about paying attention to details right under their nose in the game, they surely can't care that much about the story as a whole so I don't see why they should be catered to. Librarian gives a basic outline for the Ur-Didact's history, it's the Flood and Organon revelation which appears in Silentium. Halo 4 covers his war with humanity, his botched mutation and subsequent composing spree which is enough for the player to understand (though 'enough' really isn't enough to be honest, would've been amazing if they included all the revelations in Silentium in the game).
