I am very interested in getting in to the field of game design and development. I am a freshman in highschool and I am currently taking computer programming 1, but all we are learning is visual basic. What language do you recommend I learn to code in if I want to develop games for microsoft consoles. Also what sources can I use too further my programming knowledge? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • C++ then learn some of the data structures and go on to Directx programming Learn an object-oriented language like Java, and learn Assembley language because it is the basis of all the languages that you will use ( be careful though because it is based on the computer architecture). Go here and all deverloper software is free if you are a student. https://www.dreamspark.com/ Be versitile and learn to work in different environments like Linux(programming in this is fun) or Macs(These suck, and are usually all we have to use in grade school, but everyone else likes to develop on these).(I prefer to program on a Windows, dedication). I am a Senior at the University of Tennessee and worked on small programming assignments that have involved games. I created a Pacman game with Java then Android I have created a tic-tac-toe game and Checkers game with the Assembly language I have worked in A.I. and OpenGL and on my own time I usually work in, I guess you could call it "Co-ops," on other projects that involve game programming. But I usually taught myself because UT isn't Fullsail. I just have taken my experience from school and built upon it. There is so much to say at the moment, just be versitile with your programming

  • Whoa, you go to UT? My dad works there, my brothers an undergrad there, and my mom is doing some graduate courses there, I'm not going there because its just to close to home, but thats cool man.

Don't worry too much about what your first language is just hope to have a good teacher and absorb it all. Picking up additional languages will be easy once you understand the concepts. Besides every platform you develop for is going to have its own SDK that you'll be constantly going to the reference to look stuff up for even if you already know the language.

  • As stated, game dev is mostly in C or C++, however you can use an engine like Unity to make games, and that utilises C# and Javascript... VB is what some places teach, and it will be good enough to teach you the principles, but I recommend you move onto another language when you understand all the principles, perhaps C# or Java..
