You need to play Bioshock 1 just because it's a -blam!-ing amazing game, but skip 2 because it sucks. You don't need to play either to understand Infinite, although I'm sure there will be references abound.

prequel to bioshock one. but temporary time travel makes it very wacky as far as time line goes.
