What if instead of attacking the US itself they launch missiles at US bases in Afghanistan? Killing those inside.

Think of what would happen after they killed all those soldiers (god forbid) there country would be blown to smithereens. Why would they waste there strategic options(which probably can't even reach that far at all) on something that isn't a direct threat?
