Gates can be useful in some decks. And you don't always need 23-25 lands, either. The number of lands you put in a deck, and the number of each specific color type, depends entirely on the average converted mana cost of the cards you're putting into the deck, and in more advanced cases, it also changes if you're doing some kind of mana excel scheme. My brother's blue/green deck only has something like 4 basic forests and 6 islands, because he's getting quick mana from all sorts of other sources.
