Carter was seriously injured piloting a damaged aircraft with no landing zones nearby. 6 and Emile would have had to wait, or die trying to get past the Scarab, but there was no time to waste. Carter saw an opportunity to help his comrades and spend his last moment of life doing something. I see where you're coming from, but that's how I look at the situation.

He's a Spartan, his suit means that he would survive his injuries until they got proper medical aid. He could've jumped from the Pelican to the Scarab and destroyed it, 6 and Emile could've boarded while the Pelican distracted it. There were a lot of options that didn't involve that dumb death.

The only way he would have survived is if he had biofoam, which was lacking from the scenario. Even if he did have some, the wounds would still be blindingly painful. Carter would not been able to accomplish anything or fight, not to mention slow down 6 and Emile. They didn't have time to take down a Scarab. They didn't have time to take down any of the Scarabs, they had to drive past.

Have you read any of the books? Mjolnir has Bio Foam built in to the suit and a lot of other life support systems, these aren't ODST's we're talking about here and the pain resistance of a Spartan III is unusually high due to their Gene therapy.
