As far as I know, Canada still does not have term limits. We just hold elections every five years or so (earlier if absolutely necessary) and elect the party that we feel would do the best job. Whoever is leader of the party at the time isn't really important so long as people are willing to keep that person in office. For example, our longest serving Prime Minister, William Lyon Mackenzie King, was P.M. for 22 years. He did not hold office for those 22 years in succession, but he held onto the leadership of the Liberal party and simply became the P.M. when they won an election.

  • Totally different system though. No one technically elects the PM and he or she isn't the head of state (on paper). I know Canadians naturally juxtapose the PM with president and are confused when there aren't term limits though. I do find it strange though when Americans think the president has all this power because that's actually true of the PM. A PM with a majority government is in total control of the executive and the legislature.
