The flip side of that, is the gun was so improperly stored that the 15 year old was able to access it and its ammunition.
I'm happy they made it out ok, but serious that's how accidents happen.

It's how you would do it, not necessarily how everyone has to do it. Without knowing the kid, we can't decide whether he's able to handle a firearm responsibly. If he's able to manage a .22, he should be able to deal with pretty much anything (other than huge rifles/shotguns that are bigger than him). .22 LR will still kill someone.
