I'm the opposite of pumped. The gameplay is basically DMC3/4 dumbed down for a bigger audience and it added nothing worth mentioning to the series. Taking out the lock-on button was completely bone headed and because of it, they had to waste buttons for high time and dodge as well as put DT on L3+R3 and weapon swap on dpad. It's so messy.
I don't think most people will really care though, so it's depressing to see the press and people praising the combat because they didn't put in the effort to learn the mechanics for 3 or 4. Now anyone can mash a long air-combo with zero effort and be happy.
The most jarring thing I noticed was the difficulty of canceling combos. The missing lock-on was iffy, but I may be able to forget about it. However, the inability to bail halfway through a combo got me wrecked a few times, and made me violently angry. As it happened, I'd hammer some dodges when I saw an attack coming, but I couldn't force Dante to care enough to follow my instructions. My biggest worry so far.
As for the hipster/punk rock tone of the game, I may end up enjoying it.
