Bc bungie does two things.
1. Uses sbmm. (yes, outlier protection is literally sbmm)
2. Uses an algorithm to push for a 50/50 win-loss rate.
Bungie intentionally weights Lobbies and screws you over. They have done it for years. They change the names of matchmaking parameters but still use the same core algorithm.
I'm genuinely interested in the response for just 1. SBMM.
How would not using SBMM not create this situation? My understanding is that SBMM and outlier protection would be broke as Phở if you are matched not within your KD realm.. or at least the combined avg KD of the team... and if not strictly KD.. we have to assume that Bungie's Ranking algo uses some mix of KD/ELO etc.. but it shouldn't be that off.. and I don't think population is the only cause.
I'm asking because I get how 50/50 gets you into that situation... but I think you're lopping in SBMM disingenuously. Cause competing fairly amongst your rank and skill what is wrong with that?
SBMM restricts an already extremely limited playerbase. It isolates players and forces you into games which are terrible for connection. This is how you match people from South Korea if you live on the east coast for example. The quality of the match is horrible. It forces you into games with the same people/teams over and over. Limits weapon usage to metas and dissuades players from using off meta options. I can keep going.
Cbmm focuses on connection. Best quality match available. Significantly less lag. Full range of skill bands which promotes learning from higher skilled players. (Hence why lower skilled players cry about skill gaps in trials). More players in matchmaking pools. Less time waiting to find players. Keeps players engaged longer.
Again, I can keep going.
It’s simple. Pure cbmm with the added “snake draft” to balance out teams as best as possible. This should be the option for all playlists with the exception of comp and trials which have their own matchmaking. SBMM has been proven to be detrimental in every game it’s been put in. Even the biggest FPS in the world, call of duty, has seen significant drop off due to SBMM. Theres plenty of reviews about that out there.
I appreciate the response... beginning to see the picture but need to think about it a bit. So in terms of mode how would you make the matchmaking for the modes > for example this is my initial impression:
Comp: Rank-based 1st (gotta be within rank unless on edges).. then depending on size of pool CBMM
Control: SBMM is ok because population should be the highest here
Trials: Not familiar as haven't played for a while but I guess depends on the card you pickup?
The Rest: CBMM
I know besides this the actual calculation of where PVP players stand probably has to be re-evaluated. I won't get into stacks/solo.. but if the player evaluation was correct it would matter less...etc
