There are many lore pieces that suggest the darkness and the light only exist because the other does, so that being said the only way to truly end the darkness would be to destroy the traveler. This philosophy and concept has been mentioned several times in lore. Personally I think D3 will end with us having to choose between keeping our powers and saving the traveler or destroying the traveler in order to stop the darkness. If we did destroy the traveler then the enemy would be us.

<I think balance refers to the powers of Light and Dark, the Winnower and Gardener only representing them. I think the universe is a constant balance between the two, but the entities ultimately control how powerful one gets... And I also believe the Traveler will die to the Darkness soon. We can't bring the Gardener back, so we have to focus on getting rid of the Darkness wholly so that balance between powers can be achieved.>
