Sigh....America is not a democracy.
Also if it wasn’t for the electoral college, only 4 states would have any say. The other 46 states and our handful of territories would be completely ignored.
So I did some calculations. About 33% of the population lives in the top 4 states in the US. Even if 100% of every voter in that state under a popular vote system voted for the the same candidate for president, the election would not be decided. Many of these states have a 60-40 45-55 divide in terms of political party, so in fact that’s clearly not the case.
Under the current system only the swing states actually matter, and small and large states are ignored completely. My home state Ohio is one of the most campaigned in states, while places like New York, and new Dakota get no attention from candidates. This is largely due to the fact that under the electoral system about 50% of votes is all that is needed to win all electoral votes in a state, so swaying more than 50% in a state is a waste of resources.
