The Cabal have studied it. The 2 outer layers at least are indeed mechanical. Of course, we may have known more before the Collapse... but the latter may have messed it all up. Maybe a Warmind could tell us the true answer. About the theory Osiris had... well... Osiris theorizes that the Traveler is a "God incubator". If this is the case, then the inner most layer will hold it. I would assume (thanks to the Red Legion) that the being inside would be connected to the machine parts. This being would irradiate light and it would course through the shell. This is how the Cabal Supressor would work if this were true: It would wrap itself around the Traveler, the middle part doubling as a siphoning device. It would tap into the machine parts and begin absorbing the Light through there, and since the being inside would be connected, it would start to lose its power. Eventually, it felt this and woke up, totally destroying Ghaul in the process.
