Do all your miles stones and have on your highest posible gear before opening the milestone rewards. Also don't accept the reward if it's not higher than your light level wait 30 min and it will increase.

I'll definitely test that 30 minute thing and post back, that's an interesting tip. I do know already though it calculates across all [i]held [/i] items and not necessarily the equip slot though, you don't have to chuck on the gear to make it count. Perhaps as a "Lucky rabbit's foot" kinda thing though.
