In Destiny 1, your character is a corpse resurrected by a brain-dead machine for the sole purpose of killing other walking corpses that are enslaved to a similar power. You have no memory of your previous life, and the only things that differentiate you from the scores of other slaves that you fight alongside and against are the gear you use and the face you made at the starting menu. You make no decisions politically, express no opinions, and your only means of interacting with the world are to kill, observe, and ferry the machine that keeps you "alive" to different computer banks.
What exactly are we so worried about "carrying over" to the next game anyways? You'd drop all the gear you have right now if you found better gear, and at that point you're basically a new character.
