Eh, I am all for trans representation, but I doubt the Krill have the same concept of gender as we do, or sexual dimorphism that is even remotely similar to humans. The impression I got was that the Krill are a species where individuals sometimes change sex naturally at a certain stage of development. Aurash took the King Morph when she grew old enough, and after that point was referred to in the books of sorrow by the name Auryx and "he/him" pronouns. Likewise, Xi Ro took the Knight Morph, and after that point was referred to as Xivu Arath, also with "he/him" pronouns. Sathona took the Mother Morph and was thereafter referred to as Savathun, but continued to be referred to by "she/her" pronouns. It seems like their species is born with uniform morphology (probably something resembling Thralls), at some point in their 10-year lifespan undergo a metamorphosis, and become either a Mother (probably something resembling a Witch), a Knight (probably something resembling a Knight), or a King (Oryx seems to be the only King Morph we've seen). Based on the fact that Sathona has to eat the Mother jelly to take on the Mother Morph, there are likely things that trigger the Knight and King Morphs as well, and Acolytes may be Krill that matured without taking any Morph, or they might be an intermediary morphological stage between Thrall and Mother/Knight/King. In any case, these morphs probably have different sex characteristics, which probably have only the barest resemblance to what we humans think of as male and female. But because of the way English works we needed appropriate pronouns for them, so we called the Mothers by she/her pronouns because they are the ones that spawn young, and Knights and Kings by he/him pronouns because they don't. The name change is clearly a Krill/Hive cultural practice; young are given a child name, and when they mature enough to undergo metamorphosis, they choose a new, adult name. In Oryx's case, he did this a second time when he Took the tablets of ruin, presumably as a symbolic act to mark his moment of rebirth or second metamorphosis.
