In my ~hour of experience, the game is horrible when you're starting out. All I'm doing is hitting trees, pooping and dying. And as you go forward, my perception is that it is a continued grind.

That way if you die you still have a spawn close to where you died and you can possible retrieve your body. If your on a pvp server don't even bother with making a full thatch house. Thatch is so easy to break into you can bet any fresh spawn will try to break into it if you built one. Once you unlock wood house I would next surround your house with spike walls. If it's late and you have to go offline go ahead and don't worry about a Dino door just surround your base.
