Ok.... We were at a game con in Los Angeles, guessing it was mid 80s. They frowned on recreational chemistry on the floor back then, so we headed up to the room for some Call of Cthulhu. Kerie was GM'ing, about 6 of us in the group. One of our buddies, Robert, was playing as a former vaudeville performer who did an animal act, somebody (can't remember the character's name) and Skippy the Wonder Dog. Skippy was an older dog now, but Robert was so proud of Skippy. Since he wasn't part of the actual game play, he was just a story aid, and Skippy could do anything. For the next 4 hours, Skippy was the running gag with his wondrous and meaningless exploits. Ok, now we're getting to a tense moment, some monster or another is rising out of pool at the base of some waterfall, and we're trying to cast a barrier spell on a rope downstream. And no one can get the rope across the freaking river. One of these things, the rope we had was too heavy or something, much arguing about how hard it is to throw a rope, blah blah, but it's not happening. But.... we can throw a stick across. What if.... yeah, what if we tie the rope to Skippy, throw the stick across, and tell him to fetch? That might work. So, in a long and tedious process that only people who have played table top RPGs will understand, the negotiations and arguing and dice rolling and arguing begin, and 30 minutes later we have a fleshed out Skippy the Wonder Dog. I think he was an Airedale. Regardless, Robert has this goofy, proud grin, his loyal and smart and talented dog is going to save the day. After several attempts, we throw the stick. 1/2

 • There it is, the stick, and now it's Skippy's turn to shine. I think Kerie had it in for us that night, we (her husband and I (we were all roommates)) had totally back stabbed her in a game of Kingmaker earlier, and she was trying to kill us. She made Robert roll countless times for obstacles, and Robert was making them. We've got this chant going (there were about a dozen people in the room ) Skip-ee, Skip-ee, Skip-ee. What, a submerged branch, gotta make a roll so as not to get tangled? No problem. ("Skip-ee, Skip-ee"). Robert is beaming. Oh no, rapids? Skippy ain't afraid of rapids. ("Skip-ee, Skip-ee"). After more rolls than needed, Skippy finally gets to other side, and the room just breaks out in celebration, Robert's grinning, high fives all around, champagne corks popping (ok, that was a stretch). Point is, Skippy made it, we're gonna cast this spell, and we're gonna send this abomination back to hell. Then Kerie speaks up. "Uh, you did tell Skippy to fetch the stick, right?". "Yeah". "OK, Skippy picks up the stick, turns around, and starts coming back" Dead silence. Dead silence. Then all of a sudden, Robert screams "SHOOT HIM!!!!!!". So we did. And all thos bad rolls we were getting earlier? They were gone, replaced by critical hits. Everyone got a ceitical hit. We did something like 50X more damage than Skippy had hit points.... The next day at the Con there were buttons floating around "RIP Skippy, we cheered you on, we shot you dead". That button is one of the few things I've lost over the years that I really miss...

 • Now that, is an amazing story. But did Skippy's sacrifice help defeat the monster?

 • We did, but we were having a hard time staying focused after that, so we moved on. It was really one of those mic dropping moments - there was nothing we could have possibly done after that that would hit that moment. Besides, we had eulogies to prepare.
