You know facebook has the same thing, right? They own any pics added to the site and can use them in any way they please.

It's not really a trick. Those kinds of terms have been around for a while. They exist to protect the company sponsoring the event. It's so you can't sue them if they alter your image or use it in a fashion you don't agree with.
