The book is great, as is the film. The film doesn't try and copy the book, but rather carry on its essence (a political commentary) in the form of a satire (which plays off the style of 70s sci-fi films AND provides an opinion on the way our society is advancing).

Personally I prefer the book to the movie but that's only because the book has more story to it in my opinion, where as the movies purpose was as you said, a satire on the way our society is advancing. Which is 100% true, if you compare the Iraq war to the war with the bugs it's eerie how many similarities you'll find
