Some are very poorly written, but this allows you to form attachment to the characters. And, in a way, creates tension. On one hand, you want the main characters to succeed, since the story focuses around them. On the other hand, you want the gaurdians, almost the "bad guys" in the story to succeed, because, since you play the game as one, you relate to them. It's interesting in that sense.
