I love halo but you're right to a point. It's just back when the first two halos were new and relevant, on the original Xbox, there just really wasn't anything else like that around at the time. Plus halo is 'overhyped' cause of its old school multiplayer too. Again, something that wasn't just in every single similar game at the time.
