Maybe Mars is the past you know a planet void of life before it becomes habitable much like Venus is portrayed in the game with lush vegetation. If the planets represent past and future that's the way I see it.

Yeah I get your point but it wouldn't really make sense because you're comparing two different planets. A poster commented stating that both portals are Venus. One is past and the other future. The left portal which we consider to be Mars is actually the future. A ruined place. And the right Venus. A habitable past. And then it fits the riddle perfectly!

Mars has vex, lots of em actually. But the red world is the future and the green world is the past. The vex in the green world are called Precursor Vex, which means first. When you first enter the final vault, the enemies in the right side are precursor and the left side are the shiny new ones.
