You'd be surprised how bad Destiny would be without the aim assist. Say goodbye to ALL of your precision kills with Handcannons and Scout rifles. The gunplay in Destiny is what makes it fun. The amount of "headshot magnetism" as I like to call it, is what makes getting precision kills so easy. Your aiming reticle slows down when you're aimed at a target, which means it's easier to get precision hits. Without that, most people would be scrubs at the game.

Except when I'm shooting a guy in the head during the Crucible, and one of his team mates runs in the way pulling my gun away from my original target giving the guy ample time to kill me when it should have been him dead instead. Aim assist is a blessing and a curse.

I can guarantee you that you would barely be able to hit anything on a controller with no aim assist unless your some hardcore pro gamer. Also if you were good without aim assist you would still be 100x better with it turned on.
