2000? Millions? 2-3 months? Where, exactly, did you get these numbers? Frankly, I've played plenty of games where people sold stuff for real world profit, where anybody could get anything instantly, and nobody with their priorities even slightly straight would do it. Only the idiots and the desperately rich do it, a trading system wouldn't cripple the game nearly as much as you think it would. Hell, considering most games economies revolve around a few key items at the higher levels, Destiny wouldn't be that much out of place with the number of exotics/legendaries worth having that it has. That being said, I agree with you to a point. We shouldn't have a full on trading system, anybody trading with anybody, but I feel we should have a fireteam trading system. Something where after a fireteam clears an activity the participants able to trade any rewards they got amongst themselves, there's nothing more infuriating then getting duplicates of what your friend wants while they get duplicates of what you want.
Also, unless you're supremely lucky it takes way more then 2-3 months of dedicated playing to get all the exotics. There are some people who have been playing since release who are still far from having everything. You can go months without getting an exotic or something you don't already have, especially with Xur being the bastard he is.
• The 2000 items in bungie was kind of an understatement(although it's not far from what the actual number is most likely) and the World of Warcraft database has millions of items, just a whole assload.

  • In World of Warcraft there are anywhere from 70-100k items, that's pretty far from a million, let alone millions. That game has been running for over a decade with constant updates and additions, and nevermind all the trash items, like shitty quest items, unobtainable and untradable items would be in there. Games like WoW and Runescape are the pioneers of MMO, and no matter how painful the memories that's what everybody thinks of when you say mmo, you just can't compare that to a fresh game like Destiny. Starting off, they will have had barely any items, they would have been at a similar difficulty to get as Destiny, yet they had trading the whole time. (Minus the whole limited trading dealio Runescape had going for awhile there, good times.) Now, there are reasons why Destiny shouldn't have a dedicated trading system, but they're not because of item limitations, game stretching or RWT. It shouldn't have a trading system because the game itself is too limited, it's neither a proper MMO or FPS. There'd be no chance for an economy to form. There's no integrated chat/communication system outside of fireteams, and the most players you can possibly be playing with and interacting with at any given time is 16. That's why I think a fireteam trading thing would work out so well. A new player can't just go from 20-32 in a heartbeat, it'd eliminate most chance for RWT and give us more options. You'd still need to do the activities to get the stuff you want, but depending on the niceness of friends/random strangers it'd be a much more forgiving loot system.

Wow has well over 100k items, their database is open for you to look. But onto trading, bungie still most likely wouldn't allow it, they want players to take longer.

I literally got that number from the database. There are 787 pages, with about 100 or so items per page. With a lovely little bit of math, we come to 78700. Isn't that neat? I checked more then one database too, they all seem to agree with me at around ~75k. I was being generous when I said 100k. Bungie doesn't need us to take longer, they need us to buy future games. They've already got our money, they've already got all the investors they need, they've made millions. As far as anybody on the corporate ladder is concerned, Destiny is a massive success, they don't need to fluff playtime anymore. Pretty quick Bungie is going to learn that the way to keep costumers is to give them the stuff they want, not to dangle it. When that time comes, a trading system is going to be looking pretty handy.

  • WoWDB has the same numbers. There might have been more items in total, though I highly, highly doubt it'd be anywhere near millions, at this moment there are around 70-80k active items. Try to picture one million of an object right now, you know, 1,000,000. Lets take something small, for example. A million centimetres. A million centimetres, a tiny unit of measurement, is equal to 10km of road. Million isn't a small number in every day life. Now, each and every single item in any game needs to come from somewhere. Somebody made that item, they took the time out to design and code that item. Lets say that WoW has been active for a decade, to reach a million items they'd need to pump out a new item every 5 minutes or so. No vacations, no sleep. Every 5 minutes, they've brought us a new item for our gaming pleasure. I don't think it's particularly likely.

  • I never meant to include exotics into the 2-3 months example, the xur system simply had too many possibilities. Edited my post to reflect this, thank you for your feedback.
