I actually agree, I play both pve & pvp but I have 3 characters and only use one of them for the crucible, this means that 2 of my characters will never get the factions armour or weapons unless I can use vanguard marks to buy them

This is an excellent point and it underscores that everyone plays this game differently. I like PVP in some games like COD, but that's not why I play Destiny, I like the story and environment immersion. When I have time I do the story lines, I have done several of the missions on different difficulties. When I only have an short amount of time I do the patrols and stack some of the bounties in along with a PE event I can get some decent VMarks and the selling of materials was a bonus, but I'm not sure why I need the materials anymore. Seems like they just made the gathering of materials and loot chests an activity in futility.
