I just got Destiny a few days ago, and all I can say is that I held off getting it because all of the bad reviews. I've now concluded that all these reviews are simply written by people who don't understand what type of game this is.
A lot of people expected "Halo 2.0", but Destiny... It's a brand new baby, blending elements of character building, and first person shooters amazingly.
I've been a long time RPG fan as well as a long term Halo fan. I know Bungie isn't saying this is an MMOFPS, but it's definitely an RPGFPS. The execution was amazing. Flawless almost. This game makes me look at typical FPS games (CoD, Titanfall, Halo, etc) as a different breed.
Destiny is the first of it's kind, of course some people want a typical FPS, some want an MMO, some want an RPG. This game combines all the best parts of each.
I look forward to the future of this new gaming Genre and am now extremely excited for FPS games in general.
There are still a few things I wish would be added; I'm sure they will later; such as Trading, more in-depth skill trees (think Diablo 2), and one thing that I'm sure is being looked at already is a way to "blend" subclasses, choosing what you wish from each subclass within a particular class.
A good way to balance this would have this "Hybrid Class" have a set amount of points, and, depending on the benefit of each "skill" a different number is applied.
Such as a Titan, Hybrid class being able to choose from individual skills from both "Striker" & "Defender", however, Sticky Grenades from "Defender" might have a point level of 5, where as "Pulse Grenade" from "Striker" might have a 3 or so. And the "Hybrid Class" caps at a particular set of points.
