I think the Traveler is/contains something extradimensional, giving it prescience over most or all of the events in the system, and the ability to alter the fabric of reality in magic-like ways. Supporting evidence mainly in terms of narrative / character design here. First, consider title of the series*, we'll come back to it later. Now, the hint that the Traveler grants supernatural power. In any case, it's not specified what sort of power, only that it resembles magic. Controlling the fabric of existence, or bidding things that can, to do so for you. Easy for a higher dimensional being that sees this dimension as a holographic UI for a 5-D app. Also, think of the name Traveler. AFAIK, they haven't specified where it traveled from to get here. You don't name something that if you know the name of where it's from, so it's safe to assume it's a secret to everybody in the game setting. At least the humans. It's one thing to assume it traveled intergalactically from another system, but that's not so different from the Cabal, probably; they may have even come from another [i]galaxy[/i] somehow for a chance at claiming a bit of its power. We already know the Vex are time traveler robots or AI, so traveling in that dimension of Minkowski space wouldn't be that special for the silent protector, and neither is being a conventional high-tech computer AI. The one thing left to differentiate it is for it to come from outside the universe, from higher dimensions, however you'd like to describe it. That it's a protector, and clearly saved the world once, plays into the old dying god & savior mythos. Bungie might potentially turn that trope on its head if the thing has no agency of its own, and is not anthropomorphized or even anthropocentric at all. I know that's where some are going with their [url=http://www.bungie.net/7_Speculation-Thoughts-and-Questions-on-the-Traveler/en-us/Forum/Post?id=59938629]AI/rampancy theory[/url], the idea that it's not always going to protect by flaw of design, out of precedent in other Bungie FPS, but I feel like that's just too arbitrary for this particular force in the story. So, back to that title again. The Traveler could contain and be reacting to information about the system's future, it may have already observed it unfolding, but it's clearly also a player in that destiny. This could be due to the Vex and whoever made them messing with time travel, or it could be that actions of the Traveler are what made the Vex able to time travel at all.
