Ran through Vow last night on solar. I didn't ever seem to be igniting enemies. Everything was dead before I could apply what I guess is the necessary 100 stacks of scorch? Can someone explain how this works and how it would ever be good? Maybe I'm just dumb.

Right so, explaining from hunter point of view. First of all, get a new seasonal gun with the perk, Incandescent. Each kill with said Gunn will explode the enemy and spread the stacks of scorched to nearby foes. It sorta causes the ignition effect without actually stating it. Next guy you kill will then spread their stacks to the next foes, combining stacks. You can keep chaining that till it’s a stream of 100 stack ignition kills basically wiping out swarms endlessly. Also with a hunter, you have one throwing knife that will either add stacks of scorched with a proximity explosion or ignite on a direct hit. And if you are radiant, any knife kill recharges your melee. So theoretically you pair that with incandescent, get that first kill, dodge to be radiant, then proceed to ignite and kill everyone you spread the fire to. Also there is a fragment/perk/something I don’t recall exactly what, that while you super is full all those scorched/ignite kill increase your melee and grenade recharge rate. You combine that with the dodge to create the ignition grenade to stick to things…: 💥 💥 💥 Then if you are still radiant from all that above, you activate your super for bonus damage…. It’s serious MMO level priming and rotation of things for maximum dps. There is more to it still I’ve not fully worked out as a hunter yet….. Warlocks and Titans I’ll work on later. Tl;dr. Get a gun with Ignition, scorch 1-2 targets, spread the flames like poison and profit.

It’s a damage over time buff that will result in an explosion of you apply enough stack of it. Everyone seems to want it to work just like Volatile, but it’s not the same…and the Fragmets current available to us don’t work like bottom-tree used to work.

Nope you’re pretty much right. Certain abilities can activate ignite early (weighted knife, Hammer Strike) but it’s very hard to activate ignite on weaker targets as they burn out before activation. Hopefully they’ll tweak a fragment to allow “enemies that are defeated while scorched ignite upon death.”

Think of it like Stasis. Scorch stacks like Slow, and when you have enough stacks, you get ignition (explosion) like you would get the freeze with Stasis.
