Your Hunter currently has two 904 pieces and one 902 piece, so clearly you are getting items above 900.
The only drops that will provide gear over 900 will come from activities that indicate they award powerful gear. They will be marked with gold circle symbols on the Director map.

Engrams from ANYTHING ELSE do not give above power level 900. "ANYTHING ELSE" being Gambit prime, Gambit, The Crucible, Missions, Strikes, Quests, Bounties, Events, Heroic Events, Weekly Challenges, Campaigns, etc. Yet my friend who almost NEVER plays without me seems to get over 900 gear from almost all of these.

Do you get an onscreen notification showing a challenge was completed and no drop or just nothing? Tomorrow at 1700 UTC is the weekly reset. I suggest prepping to take some videos for after reset. One of the weekly challenges is to complete 8 Vanguard bounties. So go pick up 8 bounties from Zavala and go complete them, but do not turn them in. Go to the Tower and go over to Zavala. At this point turn on your video recording software. Once recording pull up the Director so we can see Zavala’s icon on the map is blue. Then tab to the quests page and now turn in the 8 Vanguard bounties. Once turned in go back to the map page so we can see if Zavala’s icon is now glowing yellow. Assuming it is jump out of the Director and interact with Zavala to see if he prompts you with completing the challenge and awarding you something. I suggest you make sure you have one available spot in each weapon and armor slot for this. After he presumably gives you an award inspect it on your character so we can see the power level. Assuming it is below 900 please upload the video to a site like YouTube and link to it in this thread so the Developers have something to work with.
