You were always ultimately reaching back to those servers in the US, just not going there directly. That is Bungie here in the US. They are ONLY in the US--no EU footprint. They use cloud servicing around the globe to supplement hosting, but we ALL have to maintain two persistent TCP connections to Bungie--here in the US. The bulk of our game play communications are not over TCP directly to Bungie, but go through cloud support and player direct communications that happen over UDP protocol, which will not show up in something like Task Manager or perhaps even netstat--Windows defaults to only showing TCP unless you use switches to tell it to show UDP. As for the apparent stall after Vegas, it is because Level3 is trying to hand off into Bungie's ISP or directly into their network, and their devices are set to ignore ICMP echo requests, so the trace can't go any further. This is a common option used for various reasons (security, performance, etc.). Bungie locks down most all their IP's like this... they only respond to the proper protocol and port ID they are actively listening for at a given address. So you will not be able to ping/trace to them yourself unless you know the proper addresses. They do not publish them, so will not reveal them here... but they do exist if one knows how to look for them. We often see recurring issues with route instability in the US. Level3/Century Link is routinely involved in some regions. Unfortunately we are not their customers, so it falls to our ISP'S (who have peering arrangements with such third party ISP's) to investigate and act accordingly on our behalf. The trick is getting them to take a closer look for us, and for that we usually need to provide data indicating their may be a problem for them to research. (a side note, Vegas is usually one of Level3's better corridors up to Seattle from the south... going through Texas or Southern California routes are where we more often see issues.) Run the latency test at testmy.net: https://testmy.net/latency Click the icon with the eye on it to run all the tests back to back. Watch what the line graphs are doing. If they are continually spiking really high and you keep getting high deviation numbers, then you may have a latency/jitter problem for your ISP to investigate. Each of the individual test graphs will note the address it tested, so you can look closer at that particular route (run traces and such)... sometimes a certain exchange point is a common denominator they can look at. There is another batch ping test you can run at dslreports.com for extra comparison as well: http://www.dslreports.com/tools/pingtest Yes, I know many of the test locations are a long way away and the core latency will be too high for the game... what you are testing for is the consistency of the latency. If there is too much jitter or packet loss, the game will boot you. Also need to make sure your local network is in line with Bungie's network guide: https://www.bungie.net/en/Support/Troubleshoot?oid=12915

  • Good morning, Thank you for the reply, I'll try what you've suggested above. However, I sincerely doubt it's my ISP. I honestly think it is changes that Bungie has made to Destiny. I do not have any problems with any other games, and this problem only manifested AFTER the migration to Steam. I never had any of these issues before when we were using the Blizzard Launcher (BNet). You will also notice that I'm not the only one with this problem. I cursory glance at the Forums and at the Steam Discussions area shows you that many other players on different ISPs and in different countries have similar issues ... and the common factor is that it happened after the Steam migration.

  • Not saying it is directly tied to your ISP, but your ISP is not neccesarily off the hook either. Level3 has a peering arrangement that has lead to them carrying the bulk of Bungie's traffic. They also have arrangements with the residential ISP's that puts a lot of residential traffic on their networks as well. Your ISP's routing policies determine whether they will hand off directly to Level3 or a different peering partner to leave your region, as well as where that handoff will occur. If those routing decisions wind up leaving you on less ideal routes when better options may be available, it is up to them to take steps towards remedying the situation... be that working with/through the current peering partner in play, or otherwise altering your routing to try for a better route all together. Depending on just how your ISP is managing their routing tables, they may not catch on quickly when a route goes bad. Doesn't exactly mean they are doing a bad job... they just haven't been alerted yet. Sometimes that is all that is needed... just someone giving them a heads up that something may have gone bad along the route you are taking to a service, and to provide a sample tracert or something demonstrating it. Alternatively, they may opt to monitor your packets for a while to try to capture some details instead--each ISP will respond differently. It also may not be the routes to Bungie that are causing you problems. It could be the UDP connections to the regional cloud services you are now using because you are no longer using Blizzard's regional servers in those specific roles. Doesn't mean those servers are not up to the task... could just be the routes have not been firmed up in that region just yet--which is something that has to be worked on by the relevant ISP's (which includes your ISP). Could also be issues with the player direct connections as well--ISP's haven't really had any reason to focus on optimizing that kind of traffic, so there could be a lot of things that have just slipped under their radar. If it were solely a server side issue on Bungie's end, the problems would be occurring in massive numbers. You would not have a lot of people reporting zero issues whatsoever. When these situations tend to have something else in common (like what region or ISP they are coming from or getting directed through), it is a pretty solid indicator it is routing related issue. When it is strictly a server-side issue it tends to impact everyone in kind, regardless of ISP, region, etc.

  • Thank you, I have opened a ticket with my ISP as well so hopefully they can investigate from their side. I've performed the tests you've requested and I got an A+ grade from Ping Test, and on the majority of my tests on TestMy I got 0% deviation. I had 1% deviation when connected to the US or Asian servers used in the tests. All of the graphs were fairly flat. https://testmy.net/latency?gID=agx5r7z53k The 2 biggest spikes were Dallas and Tokyo. I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to networking, is there perhaps something you see that I should bring to the attention of my ISP?

  • uggh... dug a little into your ISP's data. Looks like the hang up might be the Afrihost/Echotel to Telkom connection. If they were to go to Hurricane Electric from Echotel/Afrihost instead of Telkom, you might fair better getting to the US.. or just about anywhere really. Hurricane looks to have a much more diversified peering list to work from than Telkom. Hopefully Echotel accepts some new routes for you guys soon.

Dallas is kind of expected. Would not be surprised if it was a level3 segment. That is one of the troubled regions a lot of people get pushed through, and it is prone to a lot of congestion. Zayo used to be a much bigger player, which shifted a lot of traffic further north. Ever since Century Link bought up Level3, things have been shifting a lot... sometimes making things much worse. Out of curiousity... went to poke around a bit from your side of the pond through one ISP's looking glass tool. Saw several announcements from Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Nairobi that were directing through France and London via Zayo. Some of them were pretty new... only 2 days old. Granted, some of the paths had some rough latency... breaking 300ms on some. But one was trying to hold steady around the 280 mark to the edge router. Hopefully it is the start of a change that will eventually come your way:
1 149.301 ms 149.354 ms 149.500 ms 10ge2-10.core1.lon2.he.net (184.105.222.149) 2 150.172 ms 150.197 ms 150.314 ms ge-2-1-0.mpr1.lhr2.uk.above.net (195.66.224.76) 3 150.199 ms 150.210 ms 150.310 ms ae11.mpr2.lhr2.uk.zip.zayo.com (64.125.30.52) 4 277.162 ms 277.225 ms 277.236 ms ae27.cs1.lhr11.uk.eth.zayo.com (64.125.30.236) 7 276.561 ms 276.610 ms 276.576 ms ae5.cs1.den5.us.eth.zayo.com (64.125.29.19) 8 276.640 ms 276.648 ms 276.370 ms ae12.cs1.las2.us.zip.zayo.com (64.125.30.243) 9 276.134 ms 282.108 ms 282.101 ms ae7.mpr2.las1.us.zip.zayo.com (64.125.28.111) 10 282.102 ms 282.125 ms 282.129 ms 64.125.67.146.IPYX-071720-920-ZYO.zip.zayo.com (64.125.67.146)
