The article made sense... however trials being shut down is not about us the players. The real reason trials was canned was because it spawned a pay to win carry industry of services offering light house wins for money. You all know these services exist. This is why Trials is no more. It stands to reason that Bungie could not let this type of thing continue. Think of all the revenue these services generated that Bungie was not cashing in on. Now one could say; well what about streamers and content creators generating money for their product based off Destiny; well the trade off is free marketing and indirect ancillary services that promote the game further Bungies goals in a more wholesome way yadda, yadda, yadda. You cant stop these services, it like playing wack a mole. They popped up for trials Carrie's, and when that shut down they switched to offering services to everything under the sun doable in the game. Bungie can't shut down the whole game just to spite them so they removed the only thing offering a true competitive experience over the weekend that had everyone's heart racing.... Trials.

  • The problem is the people that pay to win. People with more money than skill. This is why eververse is so popular, again more money than brains or skill Pay to win services wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the lazy and unskilled.

Take Nike for example. Ever seen the resale market for Nike shoes and more specifically Jordans? It's a $400 million dollar a year industry that Nike gets nothing from but recognition. So no, people selling carries is not what Bungie shut it down for. Bungie [i]can't [/i]stop it, and I believe they don't want to stop it or care about it. The real reason Trials was shut down is it was just a poor game mode.

  • I agree with your position on how a corporate giant such a Nike might view independent ancillary services peddling they're goods for profit yes; but this is Bungie were talking about; they've proven that it's not beneath them to strike and strategically nerf a thing if they thought it would address a particular problem without thinking about how it would affect the game and community as a whole. I do believe they wanted to ice up the shenanigans with trials by closing it and then in doing so enviably understanding that they can't do that to all aspects of their game that these businesses offer services for. Of course well truly never know the true motivation for such a move, but I love that were able to share our ideas on the matter. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me on this.

  • And my example of Nike is more to show that if a company that size is willing to lose $400 million in potential revenue, I think Bungie is willing to lose the maybe couple hundred thousand at most paid carries could possibly generate. I realize that it's not a true Apples to Apples comparison, it's more about the idea of potential lost revenue and how marketing can sometimes be more powerful than penny pinching. To shut down the mode for that reason seems perfectly acceptable to me. If you can't stop cheating in the mode, you shouldn't have it. I just have never viewed paid carries as cheating as long as the person carrying isn't network manipulating or anything like that. That is the part of paid carries I don't think Bungie have a problem with. If someone is paying you to carry them and you are just good enough on your own without cheating to do it, Bungie doesn't see that as a problem. But if someone is paying you to carry them and they are DDoSing, that's a huge issue. I think there was more cheating than not to be honest. And I agree, we will never truly know the reasons for why Bungie does what they do -- because they do a lot of baffling things in my opinion. But I appreciate your civil responses and glad we could share thoughts about the subject. Everything I have stated here is just my opinion.

  • I saw advertisements for Luna's Howl back when it was the thing to get for upwards of $1,000. Now that Bungie actually made Survival the way Comp should have been from the get go, I've seen pinnacle ads for as little as $39. 😂 It took them forever to do it, but Bungie has reduced that pay to win black market down to almost nothing.

  • Im going to have to disagree with you. Comp now is not "how it should have been". Its way too easy and for the actually competitive and dedicated part of the community, its boring and just plain easy mode. Personally i think pinnacle weapons should never have been that strong, but they definitely should never have made the decision to change glory ranks how they did with shadowkeep so that they are basically handing out legend rank to anybody who meanders in to the playlist. They needed to make competitive more rewarding for those who COULDNT reach the ranks, by introducing more reward tiers, (ie a reward at every rank tier) instead of making the rewards feel hollow and worthless to those who are above average at the game.

  • Well, a true "competitive" mode, or ranked play would have no exotics, no heavy weapons, (and probably no specials) no supers, limited perks, and I'm sure people would cry about how boring that is. Bungie can't even begin to balance this game without taking out all the things that make it Destiny. Just because of that, there shouldn't even be a ranked gameplay mode. So Survival being too easy is a moot point.

  • Agreed. Also since people could make Money off of Carries in Trials, many Guaranteed it and then would IP Attack (i.e. DOS, IP Throttling etc.) the opposing team. That was on Bungie for having Peer to Peer networking so people could easily grab your IP Address and launch them. With Regional dedicated Host Servers that goes away.

  • regional dedicated servers arent happening any time soon if ever though...Thats a development change that would have to come with a whole new game, and just plain wont happen with destiny 2

  • I dont think anybody doesnt understand the issues that come with P2P but nobody seems to get the point that we are stuck with P2P for the life of D2 at least... if not longer

  • Same thing exists for the comp playlist and even raids. I don’t think that’s a legitimate reason to do away with trials

  • They didn't stop with them, because it kept honest people in the Comp playlist, which it needed more of. They could have, and should have shut the pinnacle black market down earlier, but its Bungie, they don't rush for anything.
