Partly the guardians really are just animated corpses. They have an intelect but it's ben canonized they have no memory. So. If hawthorn kept her memory she'd be unique in that regard... One thing is that we don't know what happened to the Speaker. Second is we don't know if what he said was true..... I think a better answer to the question of what makes a Guardian worthy is one simple word. "Fear." Ghaul says that The Guardian is not brave, they have simply forgotten the fear of death..... But that is the irony. That is the thing Ghaul can never understand... That it is fear that makes them worthy. Courage isn't being unafraid. Courage is fear it's self. Courage is to fear of what happens if you do nothing. Losing something you mustn't lose, to fear failing something which you must not fail, to fear living, knowing you let someone else die. If you boil it down to it's very essence, you will always find the same four words when dealing with someone who has risked their life for another. "Because I was afraid." Courage isn't the absence of fear, it isn't the conquering of fear, it is fear, the fear of failure, and it is a fear that will drive you to move when all reason tells you to be still. It is to fear something more than you fear death. Ghaul is driven by hunger for victory, and recognition.... He could never understand being afraid for another, or dying for them. Thus, he could never be chosen. I have always felt that Guardians are chosen from people who gave their life defending others.... People who were so afraid of failing others that they'd sooner die fighting. Guardians. So why are guardians worthy? Not devotion, sacrifice, death... It's much more simple.... They are chosen, because when they died, they died afraid of what would happen if they didn't act.

  • Depends on when they died. Cayde remembers almost all of his previous life. Other Guardians dream of their past life. Everyone has their own opinions, but I doubt the reason the Main Character is the only one selected to have the vision and re-acquire the light is because they are afraid. They are all afraid. I think we were chosen because we were devoted to sacrifice anything for the cause. Ghaul wasn't chosen because he's a villian. Why would a beacon of hope and light chose a person who has killed LITERALLY TRILLIONS of people to have the light? - - - still, would have been cool to see her come back as a guardian - - if you pay VERY close attention to grimoire, you don't actually have to be dead to become a guardian either - - there is a mission in TTK where you Ghost tells you that you were not its first pick - - the person they wanted before they chose you refused them, saying they had been through too much in a prior war to become a guardian

Tell me something. Have you ever personally been in a position where if you didn't act, the result would be someone dying? Maybe your self. Maybe someone else... A crystallized moment of time where you had to choose between life and death...Or make that choice for someone else.... You're not really arguing with me... You're arguing with everything that is known of human psychology. As well as most of human recorded history. Human beings aren't good at making selfless decisions... Point of fact they can't, they don't. They make altruistic decisions, decisions which benefit others more than they benefit the self. But they make those decisions for selfish reasons. You can ask literally any psychologist about this. But if I'm going to debate the matter with you I need to have some common ground from which we can discuss the matter because I don't think I can demonstrate it to you by just asking you to imagine it. As for Cayde, no, he can't remember anything before he was a guardian. He had a journal, and put things together from it and guess work, but he's stated as much that he has no idea rather or not Ace in his journal was someone he just made up so he had someone to write to. And as for the reference in TTK. The person in that pod was a guardian. The ghost made comments about his light level. And I don't think even Bungie is entriely sure what to do with that. I think they put it in for a direction they were thinking of going, not specifically with intent of following up on it.
