No, they aren't. The Southern Strategy wasn't ENTIRELY about race, just like the Civil War wasn't ENTIRELY about slavery. But to deny the role that race played in one, and slavery played in the other is to be willfully ignorant. The Southern Strategy was a calculated effort to leverage resentment. Regional (North v South, Fossil fuel producer v consumer), Demographic (rural v urban) , Racial, Cultural, and Religious animosities that existed within the American population as a path to political power. As America was beginning to transition from an ethnocentric (white, Anglo-Saxon) society to cosmopolitan/ multi-cultural one. Marry this to a media infrastructure whose sole purpose was to "manufacture" counternarratives to anyone who disagreed with this political coalition..... ..and you now have the mess that we currently have. A society and political system held hostage to resentment and backlash. 1. A Republican Party that is so divorced from reality, and ideologically rigid that its incapable of governing. Even when it controls all the levers of power. 2. They are incapable of governing because they no longer stand for any sort of principles.....other than power. So when they no longer have Democrats/Liberals to fight against, they just turn on each other. The price of defining yourself mainly by what your "against". 3. A party that has moved so far to the right---and dragged the country with it that now our "Progressive" party basically stands for the same policies today that the GOP of the 1970s did. Todays Democrats are in actuality a Centrist party. The GOP---and the "Conservative Movement" in particular----has wander so far to the right and off into the weeds that it no longer a conservative party. Its a **revanchist** one. One committed to dragging the nation back to the a pre-1950s social order, and a pre-1920s economic order....and is now rubbing shoulders with proto-fascist movements. First the Tea Party spasm under President Obama....and now the Trump Administration jumping into bed with the "alt-right". Which is what you have left with the KKK, Neo-[url=http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law]-godwinslaw!-[/url] and Skinheads take off their "uniforms" and try to look more "mainstream".
