Here's the thing. Nintendo has no intention of trying to please hardcore gamers. That's not their market. Nintendo aims for purely entertaining, casual experiences. Their goal is to have a console in the hands of every family, every non-gamer, etc, and provide them with quality entertainment that while not top of the line, is enjoyable from a gameplay standpoint. The place they are failing in is their marketing. Think about the Wii. That thing was heavily marketed on tv, and ended up being in nearly every household, even though it was outdated tech. Then look at the wiiU, the average person still doesn't even know it's separate from the Wii. Nintendo can really hit it big with the switch. They just need to understand who to market towards. It not hardcore gamers.

 • I disagree somewhat. For one I don't think it's an either or. A game like Super Mario Odyssey pleases everyone. But Nintendo certainly does care about the more enthusiast gamer. They're the people that buy the first wave of consoles and introduce it to second and third wave buyers. Everyone cites Wii Sports as the reason the Wii took off. The reason the Wii took off was because people like you and I were buying a Wii to play Twilight Princess at launch and in anticipation for Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, and the hope of more Nintendo classics. By getting Wii's into that first wave of households it then introduced Wii Sports to the larger population.

 • To your point my kids absolutely love our Wii U. They play with that thing like my brother and I used to play with our SNES. If I bought minecraft for it they wouldn't even turn on another console. Granted, they are only 2, 4, and 6 so it's just easier for them to understand and use as opposed to my PS4, which really doesn't have that many great family targeted local multiplayer games on it anyway.

 •
Here's the thing. Nintendo has no intention of trying to please hardcore gamers. That's not their market.
That's not exactly true. Granted, back in the Wii days Nintendo repeatedly refused to acknowledge the distinction between hardcore and casual gamers. However they made significant efforts to court hardcore gamers with the Wii U. The Wii U launched with Batman Arkham City, Assassins Creed 3, Mass Effect 3, Black Ops 2, Ninja Gaiden 3 and Darksiders 2. Bayonetta 2 and the Devils Third were both exclusive to the Wii U. A quick search on Google shows that Wii U played host to quite a few M rated games ( since most people seem to equate hardcore gaming with M rated games ).

 • For the longest time I didn't even know the WiiU was a thing until it was like 4 years old lol.

 • I'm sorry man but you're wrong. Nintendo needs the hardcore gamers. They marketed towards families with the Wii U and that thing didn't sell shit. The Wii however sold 100 million units, you think that happened without hardcore gamers and a alot of them, buying that system? Yes Nintendo has a much more centered spot than the other two systems and it's easier for them to appeal to casual families and children. But families and children aren't going to buy enough games to keep the Switch afloat. They've got to get actual gamers back into their hardware.

 • The Wii sold almost exclusively to families with kids, senior citizens, and retirement homes. Nintendo hasn't had the attention of hardcore gamers since the GameCube.

 • They didn't really market the wiiU at all though. there was far, far less advertisement than with the wii, and it shows. Yes, having hardcore gamers on board would help. But it's not nearly as important as proper marketing. Though as of right now, it seems they are failing at that as well.
also the issue of them still not producing enough systems and artificially increasing demand. The switch is already sold out....
• I agree with you, proper marketing is absolutely important, and yes somehow they are -blam!-ing this up already. But IMO they need to market to the older gamers as well as the families or they're done. The thing is slightly older gamers like me, who are in their mid twenties, grew up with Nintendo. You were either a Nintendo kid or a Sega kid back then, and if you were a Sega kid you were a -blam!-in pariah. Lol They have a built in market in the hardcore gamers already, they just need to market towards these people again and get just a few of them back on board.
