I looked into it a bit more, it looks like it was intended to be an anti cheat system but it was so poorly written that it gave open access to pretty much any programs on your system including malware. So while it wasn't exactly malware itself it opened up your security so you could more easily be taken advantage. They have since reverted to an older build and removed it so there is no worry with upgrading now. You can get all the latest content it just won't have any anti cheat or security holes.
