Yup, we've got a new map of... a quarter of the known universe, charting 1.2 million galaxies. Each one of course containing ...well, billions of stars. Estimates for our own galaxy put it at 100-400 billion.
Mind boggling. Beautiful. Majestic. Beyond imagining.

4 回覆How exactly does one make a map of a quarter of the universe when we haven't even left our own Solar System yet? Not saying this is fake, I'm just curious.

Beautiful. Come, my fellow nerds. My fellow losers, my fellow Vape Lords. Lay down thy guns, thy shanks, thy toilet paper. Actually, keep the toilet paper. For we will explore, discover, and expand the human race. Let us reach to the cosmos... And release upon this galaxy...
The power of VAAAAAAAAAPE!!

5 回覆I was never a fan of Sagan-esque rants about how insignificant humanity is, but this is still mind-blowing.

It looks like a piece of psychedelic art. Or what happens when you stare at a bright light and then close your eyes Also it's noteworthy that this is just 'a quarter' of the 'known' universe. At the very least there's 4 times that much stuff in the universe and then God knows how much extra that we don't know about.

6 回覆Wow. There really isn't a big enough deal being made about the fact that we even have the capability of mapping 1/4 of the freaking universe. Even if it's only on a galaxial scale, that's astonishing.
