In Halo 3, how did the flood-controlled High Charity arrive at the Ark?

  • Upon arriving in Sol, the Gravemind detected that a Forerunner portal on Earth was active and understood that it led to the Ark. When High Charity passed by Mars, the Gravemind used its esoteric knowledge of neural physics to push High Charity's slipspace engines past possible bounds in order to reach the Ark in an impossibly short time at the expense of High Charity's structural integrity.

Err... don't you think that's a bit far-fetched? Correct me if I'm wrong, but a ship's speed through slipspace has nothing to do with the slipspace drive, rather its dependant entirely on the power of the ship's regular propulsion system. I'm certainly no expert in neural physics, but I don't see how one could use some ancient knowledge to increase an engine's chemical thrust by a factor so unfathomably large. Maybe a better question: how did the gravemind know the Ark's coordinates? Or was that just good ol' magic precursor physics too?

Movement through slipspace is handled by the ship's propulsion system, however the accuracy and speed at which you travel in relation to real-space is dependent on the slipspace engine. IIRC, fan calculations indicate that along certain slipspace routes, Covenant ships are 100 times faster than UNSC ships during the war. If that was due to their propulsion system, then the UNSC would be outmaneuvered and flanked by the Covenant in every naval engagement. Also for further consideration, travelling through the portal at Voi takes roughly 2 weeks to get to the Ark, yet the Pillar of Autumn took 3 weeks to get from Reach to Alpha Halo. Clearly then, speed in slipspace relative to real-space is not determined by a ship's propulsion. 343i also has a direct route to the Ark from human space at ~8-11 months in the post-war era.
Maybe a better question: how did the gravemind know the Ark's coordinates? Or was that just good ol' magic precursor physics too?
I don't think we know the answer to that. However, the Gravemind seemed to already know where the Ark was based on the Halo 3 Terminals where Mendicant Bias rushes through the Maginot Sphere to stop the firing of the Array at the Lesser Ark.
