Random thoughts from the cellar. II

So I think I'm going to do a couple of these stream-of-conscious threads. I like knowing that my view on things is not universal, and I feel like attempting to understand other views is a good brain exercise. For a while now, I've preached about how I believe every human has an innate narcissism in them that embodies some of the body's functions and the our psychology. Now at first, you may want to say "oh well I'm not narcissistic," to which I ask, isn't that being a little self-centered to remove yourself from a label that normally possesses a negative connotation, when I'm placing that label on every human? (Inb4loadedquestion) Regardless if you believe you are narcissistic or not, I think this becomes more obvious in "do or die" scenarios, where you can save your life or save another's. Now think about this for a second. When asked, most people will elect the more "noble" option of saving somebody, but is that what they will actually do? Ask yourself that question. When it comes time, are you sure you're going to be thinking about nobility? What about the bystander effect? Delving further into this, I also believe that everyone is very judgmental, whether it is explicitly or implicitly, and that this innate narcissism is the cause of this, and a blinding factor. Once again, we have a term with a negative connotation attached to it, judgmental. And once again, if asked if you are judgmental, most will lean towards the "more accepted" answer of no. But how true is this? When you walk down the street and you see a homeless man, does that man embody the same presence in your mind as a man who is tending to his lawn? Is it a fair judgment to make to be less trusting of the homeless man? Do you try to avoid the man who's mowing his lawn like you do the homeless man? Does a "fair" (fair being fair in your mind) judgment disqualify you from being described as judgmental? Now I realize that the population on this website comes in all different colors, shapes, and sizes, but the one undeniable trait we all share, is we perceive the world from our own body. Whatever is chiefly reinforced in said perception, is going to be more easily accepted than something that is rarely perceived. So, in short, do you believe are we all narcissistic, judgmental, cynical creatures? And if so, why do we consider some people as better than others? If not, do you believe yourself to be better than other people, say for instance, the cynical, judgmental, narcissists?

  • I believe that being judgmental is part of your instincts, whether your survival is at stake or not. Living in a bad place growing up I was constantly judgmental, and those judgments kept me from hanging out with certain people that would have possibly put my life at risk one way or another. Judgements and a judgmental mentality are necessary in society with the amount of dangerous people that we are surrounded by, despite the negative connotation that it has. As for narcissism and cynicism, I'll agree that ultimately there is a part of me that would be called narcissistic, but it lies separate from the cynic. It's hard for me to see myself be both of those at the same time, but then again, I am bipolar. Usually being narcissistic in my case would be coupled with optimism, and cynicism with depression and pessimism.

  • I don't know about cynical, but I do think everyone is definitely judgemental and narcissistic to a degree. I certainly am. Being judgemental or narcissistic doesn't mean that you're outwardly and wholly like that though.

I think we consider certain people better than others based on the standards we each associate with what makes a person "good." This will obviously mean many different things to everyone, and it should, as the very act of living requires us to view the world through our own lense, meaning life itself is subjective.

      • I've discussed things like this frequently. I find it irritating when certain words or phrases automatically carry negative connotations. One I've often discussed, is "selfish". Which really ties in to narcissism. Virtually every action ever is selfish in nature. Selfishness doesn't automatically make someone a bad person. It's hard to find people who can give an honest and open analysis of themselves, really. Most negative connotations stem from self denial, think.

      • Cynical? Not so much. There are many work truly (sometimes naive) positive outlooks and hopes. While I'm aware of my own narcissism and believe many posses it I could see hermits or those who are disconnected socially not caring And caring is a main contributor to self praise Back woods simple Joe tending to his geese probably only has one concern Tending to his geese Pls no literal

      • But what is good and what is evil aren't those just subjective terms that change from person to person.

        • I feel like in my brain somewhere my education is screaming what I need to say. Stupid education. I think what you are referring to is the Ego. The human ability to distinguish one's self from other human beings. I might be wrong. Yet I don't think we are naturally judgemental, it think a vast amount of it is taught by society. Your homeless man for example naturally wouldn't be any different from the man tidying his lawn. We would assess, height, weight and basically anything that would make them a threat or possible addition to our person/pack.

Judging people is inevitable, everyone forms ideas an opinions without even trying to. People denying that is pretty silly.

          • All of those traits can be said to be on continuums with their opposites. Everyone should fall somewhere on those continuums and therefore have each of those traits to some degree.

            • Cynicism, narcissism, and being judgmental are all, even if negatively viewed, survival skills.
