Bad choice for your first ff as its not really a final fantasy; completely different atmosphere, it also has vita level graphics and an annoying timed element. Also, it's not turn based.
Definitely get final fantasy 10. If you have an older ps get 9 then 7, 8 if you can't get enough. Avoid 12 and 13

Going back to it it might be better; at the time the break from turn based combat was too sharp and made the inferiority too apparent; perhaps now I have grown more accustomed to the mediocrity such a system brings about I might be able to overlook that and see some good in the game. Likely other elements would have aged and I'll have a problem in other areas now though lol

12 was the first non turn based numbered ff. the story was also somewhat boring. 13 again was a terrible combat system with problems stemming from too linear early on to having a time based system later. Lots more things too.

I don't tend to finish dull games, especially when they represent the ruination of my favourite franchise.
