In Halo, at least ([i]as I haven't had the time to really dig into Marathon to find the other parallels[/i]) you will also see characters other than the protagonist parallel what happens to these men. Ogier=Master Chief Charlemagne=Arbiter And you can go from there. So these things parallel in each individual IP, but also go across all three IPs... If that makes any sense.
