This is a place of life." I'd assume this is talking about the guardian, who was brought back from the dead by a ghostly, infiltrating the black garden. If the black garden's heart was alive, does this show an antithesis to the traveler being a construct of metal and machinery? Also, I don't trust the speaker. His mask bothers me.
