How personal are the clans? I don't want to join and just be lost in a sea of members who don't actually play together.

I agree! I got into a discussion with the leader of Shadow Ravens that quality trumps quantity, and having a 2000 person clan is foolish. So I took the middle path - made the main clan exclusive and elite, and have open subclans for all to enjoy/have a shot to move up
